Exercise is essential for the development of gross motor skills and is needed to keep fit and healthy. It promotes a healthy heart, bones and can help with regards to their emotional wellbeing as it relieves stress and anxiety. In the UK children have scheduled PE lessons each week to ensure that they are active and reduce childhood obesity.
Any additional exercise that they can do outside of lesson time will also be beneficial and help create healthy habits for the future. If you struggle to get your child off the couch and want to do more exercise as a family, here are some tips that you can use from an independent school in Berkshire.
1. A Bit of Healthy Competition
If you’re struggling, why not take up outdoor sports as a family? They are fun ways in which you can get active, and they will be motivated through competition and the excitement of winning. They will be too distracted to realise that they’re breaking a sweat.
2. Leave the Car on The Drive
Walking offers a nice and easy way to get some exercise in. It’s at a steady pace so they won’t feel tired and get exhausted. If you can spare the time, try walking to do the school run a few times a week. It will get their activity levels up whilst also helping the planet.

3. Games for Fitness
If your child’s an avid gamer, why not use that to your advantage? Games like the Nintendo switch and Wii offer immersive fitness games where they will need to get up and move around.
These are just a few of the ways in which you can encourage your child to exercise. What we recommend is to take a step towards getting fit as a family as they will feel motivated as you will all be on the same journey.
