How to Identify Your Child’s Learning Style

We all have a unique way of absorbing and processing information. This is called our learning style. There are three main learning styles and if parents can identify which one is most applicable to their child, they will be in a better position to support them in their academic endeavours. With that said, here is some more information about the three main learning styles from a private school in London.

1. Visual Learners

Visual learners, sometimes referred to as spatial learners, are better at retaining information when it is displayed to them in a graphic way, such as a photo or a mind map. They tend to remember facts and figures when they have been displayed in a diagram or via symbols, and like to use coloured pens when studying. Here are some indications that your child might be a visual learner:

  • They have an interest in arts and crafts
  • They have a good sense of direction and can read a map fairly well
  • They are good at recognising people and places
  • They are observant
  • They are keen readers

2. Kinaesthetic Learners

Kinaesthetic learners are drawn to physical activities and like to learn through hands-on tasks, like role playing or holding up flash cards. If you think your child might be a kinaesthetic learner, look out for the following signs:

  • They prefer physical subjects like sport or drama
  • They tend to fidget and can’t sit still for long periods of time
  • They often use hand gestures when speaking
  • They developed physical skills like walking or crawling early on
  • They have strong hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills

3. Auditory Learners

Aural or auditory learners are drawn to sound and are better at retaining information when it is presented to them verbally, as opposed to being written on a page. They are typically good listeners and are good at following verbal instructions. Here are some other signs your child might be an auditory learner:

  • They enjoy talking and discussing things
  • They often sing along to songs or create their own songs while playing
  • They are drawn to music
  • They would rather listen to a podcast over reading a book
  • They notice sounds that other people don’t recognise

Understanding your child’s learning style will give you the knowledge and awareness you need to provide appropriate learning resources for them, therefore supporting their progress in school.
