How to Immerse Your Kids in History for Better Understanding

Collaborative Post

You can help your children understand complex subjects if you immerse your kids in history. Studies have shown they are more likely to remember facts and details, form greater opinions and connect more when they are actively engaged with subjects they may otherwise find boring.

Visiting Historical Sites

The world is littered with historical sites. Even your local area, no matter where you live, will have a unique history. Getting out and about these is a great way to begin a historical journey. And for a further-reaching understanding of the ancient world, visiting far-flung sites is something your kids will never forget. For instance, some educational establishments offer school trips to Rome and Greece these days, where kids can get up close and personal.

Guided Museum Tours

Museums are fun places to go with pretty much the entire family to learn about the history and have a good time. So to see history as close as possible brings it to life. Children can learn about the past by looking at clothes, instruments, and other artefacts in museums. You can also get your child interested in learning by getting them to write down what they’ve seen in a journal full of fun facts. The museum gift shop is also happy to help you with any extra materials.

Trace Your Family Immerse Your Kids in History

Look at the history of your family. Telling children stories about their ancestors helps them connect to the past and see where they originated. Images and records from your child’s ancestors can help them see where they fit into history. Let your kids talk to their grandparents and other elderly relatives about their lifetimes and how things have changed since they were young. Then they can put together a family tree and the medical history of issues like diabetes.

Child-Friendly History TV

There are a lot of shows like Rome, Vikings, and The Borgias on TV these days. Even though these are mostly true, they are meant for adults. There are some great TV shows for kids, which is good news. Horrible Histories is a good example of this, and you can watch it for free on BBC iPlayer. The books are very popular, and the TV show has won many awards. And you can see live performances of Horrible Histories in theatres all over the United Kingdom.

Historical Video Games

Whether you like them or not, there are a lot of historical facts in some video games. Not all of them, like the Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed series, are violent action games. Even though these are good for older children. Games like Civilization and Europa Universalis are great ways to teach kids about specific historical events from the past. Games such as Age of Empires and the Total War series are also surprisingly detailed and historically accurate strategy games.

Summary

You can immerse your kids in history to help improve their understanding. Visiting historical sites is excellent for this. You can also go through your family tree or play historical video games.
