Certain stadia in the UK stand out as being tough places for opposing teams to visit: not just because of the quality of opposition on the pitch, but because of the vocal support that the home team enjoys from the stand.
For spectators, a strong atmosphere can add to the sense of community and transcendence we get from the sport. When the volume goes up, the power of sport increases. It becomes about more than twenty-two men kicking a ball about; it becomes an almost religious experience!
If you’re planning a trip to the UK, and you’d like to watch a game or two while you’re over here, then which might make the shortlist?
Anfield
Anfield isn’t the largest or most impressive stadium in the UK, but it’s among the most richly historied. It’s hosted some of the most spectacular games of all time, and seen last-minute winners, dramatic comebacks, and raucous Merseyside derbies. The famous Kop is always in strong voice – especially when Liverpool are playing well. You’ll get a chance to see some of the game’s most famous stars here, including Virgil van Dijk, and three-time Golden Boot winner Mohammed Salah.
Glasgow
If you’re in Scotland, then the Old Firm dominate the football landscape. Both Celtic Park and Ibrox Stadium offer an impressive atmosphere. The atmosphere of the former has been rated excellent by an array of Champions-League-winning talent. On big European nights, it’s an intimidating place to visit.

The Emirates
Arsenal are currently enjoying a league campaign that few people outside of London Colney saw coming. And the Emirates Stadium, in Islington, is a happy place to be. Whether the title push can be sustained all the way to the end remains to be seen – but what can’t be disputed is that this once-dreary stadium is louder than it ever has been.
Old Trafford
Some of the best teams in the history of world football have played their games at Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United. The club has been off the pace for the better part of the decade, but the club retains a considerable stature.
St James Park
There’s a good reason the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund chose to invest in Newcastle United. It’s a club with a long history in the Premier League, with an impressive stadium in the form of St James Park. The games here are sure to get more high-profile, as investment in the club continues apace!
