There are many ways in which you can help your child academically. Reading is one of them. It can help them in more ways than one as it builds their speaking, writing and comprehension skills. As they will be able to interpret things for themselves, they will also be able to take control of their learning and become more independent. If you would like some tips on helping your child to read, we have some here from Reflection Nurseries.
Storytime
It goes without saying but if you want to help your child with their reading, it’s important that you make the time to practice with them. Story time is a great time for this as you can get them to sleep and easily embed it into your routines.
Phonetics
When teaching your child to read, it is important to make sure that they fully understand the basics which are known as phonetics. They are the building blocks for reading and are the sounds which letters make. For example, “H” makes the sound “huh”. They make it easier for children to hear the words being spelt out and can take them a while to get their heads around initially as there are 26 letters in the alphabet. Using the names that we’re used to can create confusion just like using capital letters which is why both should be avoided.

Picking a Book
When picking a book, it’s also important that you opt for material that’s both interesting for them and easy yet challenging enough for them to read. Usually, you’ll be able to find information to determine whether they are age appropriate.
Read to Them
Even if your child’s not ready to read, you can help to begin the process by reading to them. They will pick up on words and become familiar with what they look like.
