Did you know that creative writing projects can be very beneficial for young people? They might not become the next JK Rowling, but creative writing is more than just a possible career route. I have teamed up with an independent school in Kew to share some advice on how to explore creative writing with your child.
How To Help Kids With Creative Writing
Provide Them With Prompts
Getting started, or finding inspiration, is often the hardest part of starting a creative writing project. With that said, the best way you can help your child with this endeavour is to suggest some prompts. Here are a few examples:
- Pretend you’re an alien visiting Earth for the first time. Write a letter to your family back home about your experiences here.
- Think about your life in ten years’ time and write a diary entry. Do you have any children? Are you married? Do you have a job? Where do you live? What do you do on a normal day?
- What is your favourite memory? What makes it so good?
- Write about someone you look up to and what makes them so special

Encourage them to Read
Encouraging your child to read will help them with their own ability to write creatively. Not only will they learn about different genres and how to form different sentences, but they will also develop their vocabulary and become better with spelling and grammar.
If your child has finished a book recently, their creative writing project could be to rewrite the final chapter. Alternatively, they could pretend to be a journalist and write a review of the novel, discussing what emotions it invoked and whether or not they would recommend to others.
These are just a few ideas to get you started. If you require some more support where creative writing projects are concerned, don’t be afraid to contact your child’s teachers for some further inspiration.
