We love to explore Scotland as a family, and the rest of the UK as much as possible. Weekends away or full summer holidays are filled with adventuring in new cities. In the past I have preferred self catered accommodation while the children have been younger, but now they are older we have been staying in more hotels. That means we can do more of our favourite activity – eating out.
I have always loved food, and eating in a restaurant as a family is always fun (if a little stressful sometimes). I prefer to stick to restaurants that are used to children, staff that can engage with and tolerate the excitement and loudness that can sometimes come with kids makes things a lot easier.
We spent our summer holidays in Edinburgh last year and we hope to make a return soon. I spent 5 years living in Edinburgh before I got married so it’s a city very close to my hear, and JHogg and the kids have grown to love it too. My eating our habits have changed in the last 12 years since I left though, so I’m excited to try some of these family friendly restaurants in Edinburgh next time we go back.

Frankensteins
I have actually been to Frankensteins before, many times in fact. It’s one of my favourite places to watch the 6 Nations and I spent a lot of time there as a student.
Under 18’s are allowed on the premises until 8pm and they are very welcoming for kids. The pizza menu is great for a quick family lunch in a quirky atmosphere. You can find Frankensteins on George IV bridge in a converted gothic church. As you would imagine, it is Frankenstein themed and a lot of fun.
It is so simple to book a table online at Frankenstein’s and enjoy a pizza from one of their amazing chefs, meaning you don’t have to wait for a table.
Vittoria On The Walk
During our visit last year we at at Vittoria On The Bridge, and I think we were all in agreement that it was the best Italian meal we’ve had. At least the best in the very long time. The setting was great, the staff looked after us well and the kids both cleared their plates – so the food must have been amazing!
For our next visit we want try it’s sister restaurant, Vittoria On The Walk. Located in Leith, it has been serving Italian food in Edinburgh for 45 years. The children’s menu offers 3 courses (or less) for £8.50 which is very good value considering the quality of food Vittoria offer. They are open from 10am daily for breakfast, with lunch menus and dinner menus available as the day goes on.
Hard Rock Cafe
When we first spoke about visiting the Hard Rock Cafe in Edinburgh with the children my husband wasn’t too sure if it would be the right place for the – but he couldn’t have been more wrong. Both boys loved the loud music, with Zee dancing on the street as we approached the front door. The staff at the entrance danced with him before taking us to our seats.
The kids meals came served on plates shaped like guitars, with sauces up the neck in little sections. We all enjoyed our meal and chatting with the staff. They were happy to make adjustments to the children’s meals as requested.

Located on George Street, Hard Rock Cafe Edinburgh is central and easy to access from the bus or train stations – ideal as a first stop when you arrive in the city. Like all Hard Rock restaurants the walls are filled with music memorabilia.
