Moving into a new home is really exciting, especially if you are increasing the size from your old home. Having a little more space can be a real game changer, and things like a garage or garden shed can make life so much easier. Or so we think.
It’s never long before we realise our long dreamed for garage is actually a lot smaller than we remembered it being. All thoughts of just storing everything you don’t want in the house out in the garage quickly go out the window while you try and work out exactly what you want to do with the space. All is not lost though, there are things you can do to maximise the space you have and make the most of a small garage.
How To Organise A Small Garage
Declutter
Now this might seem a bit too obvious, but decluttering makes a huge difference to your space. Get absolutely everything that is in your garage out and separate it into piles. You might find that you have multiples of some items without even realising it because they’ve been stashed in different places.
Many of us are very guilty of decluttering inside the house and boxing up all the items to donate, but putting them in the garage to sort “later”. For a lot of us, later never comes. If you find boxes of items for donation all ready to go then get out and do it right away!
Look critically at the items you have and think about when you last used them. If it was more than a year ago then chances are you won’t actually use it again and it’s time to let it go. Work out if it’s worth selling or donating anything you don’t need anymore, and then recycle or bin everything else.
Categorise
Once you’ve worked out which items you want to keep start to categorise them. The best way to categorise your items is by the purpose they serve. Keep tools with other toys, outdoor toys with other toys and Christmas decoration all together. You may want to consider using the following categories for of your items.

- Bikes & Equipment
- Gym & Workout Equipment
- Seasonal Decor
- Camping Equipment
- Car Supplies
- Gardening Tools & Products
- DIY Tools
Utilise Storage Options
When you have categorised your items and grouped them together, take a look at the storage options available. There are loads of different kinds of storage boxes and the ones you will need will depend on what you are trying to store.
Keep The Floor Clear
The ultimate goal is to have a clear floor. No stacks of boxes, no piles of sports equipment. Everything should have a place and be easy to put away. Look at shelving units for around the walls that will fit the storage boxes you are using. Check if they have adjustable shelf heights so you can personalise them to your needs.
If you have large equipment such as bikes, look into purchasing large hooks so they can be lifted onto the walls or ceiling.
Once you have done all of this your small garage will be organised and ready for use. A clear floor and labelled storage makes it much easier to see what you have and makes going into the garage less overwhelming. A small garage doesn’t have to be messy – once you’ve decluttered and got storage solutions in place you’ll be able to find everything as soon as you need it.
