How to Raise an Optimistic Child

Optimism is the key to living a healthier and happier life. Many often refer to optimism as ‘looking at the brighter side of things’ as it involves not dwelling on the negative and embracing failure as an opportunity for growth. We have teamed up with a private girls prep school to share a few tips on raising an optimistic child.

Let Them Make Their Own Mistakes

Parents have the natural instinct to help their children when struggling and to protect them from making mistakes. This however can deprive them of the opportunity to learn, grow and even result in pessimism. To avoid this, you can allow for calculated risk-taking that involves assessing risks and teaching them how to do it.

Build Self-Belief

Optimistic children aren’t just born, we all have a fear of failure. To boost your child’s optimism, remind them of all the great qualities they have so that they can build self-belief. You can also do this by slowly pushing them to try new things and build their confidence.

An Appreciation for The Journey

Things can seem difficult and overwhelming which can force us to run in the opposite direction but having the right mindset can make them seem exciting and all worth it. You can do this by teaching your child how to reflect on situations and see the silver linings.

Another thing that you can do is similar to calculating risk and involves getting your child to draw up a table of risks and rewards. This will help them to determine whether or not a challenge is worth committing to.

Honesty

Being honest with your child about their ability and the expectations that they have set themselves can help them to make better decisions. This can help to avoid a lot of hurt and potential damage to their self-confidence.
