Teaching Your Child to Respect Other Cultures

AD | Sponsored Post

We live in a diverse society and our children are regularly exposed to people from different backgrounds and cultures. It’s perfectly normal for your child to express curiosity about these different people, so it’s important that you teach them the value of diversity and to treat people as equals. Read on for some tips from a prep school in Oxfordshire.

Raising Children To Respect All Cultures

Talk About Your Child’s Own Background

Help your child understand their own ancestry and why your family celebrate different traditions. Perhaps some of your ancestors were immigrants into the country, so you could chat with your child about why they moved here and how that must have felt. Explain that even within your child’s ethnic or social group, no two people are the same, but that doesn’t mean they should be treated any differently.

Teach Your Child to Respect Others

Your child will encounter lots of different types of people throughout their lives. They might have a peer at school with learning difficulties or know someone who has two mums or two dads, rather than one of each. Perhaps one of their friends comes from a biracial family.

Explain to your child that the things that make us different is why we’re so special, and there’s no right or wrong. With that said, they should be kind and compassionate to everyone, not just people who are similar to them.

Explore the World

This doesn’t mean you have to go on regular adventures across the pond, you could simply use a world map or globe to explore the world with your child. The Discover The World board game is a great place to start. Teach them that there are people living in all of the different countries across the planet, and within those countries people have different skin colours, speak different languages, have different religious beliefs, and wear different types of clothing.

Perhaps you could pick a new country to investigate each week and do your own research as a family to find out more. The more your child understands how diverse the world is, the more accepting and tolerant they will be.
