Childcare can be difficult to arrange. Whether it’s for that last minute trip to the shops or day care for when you’re at work, it’s important that there’s someone there to watch over your child. This is because of their maturity and ability to cope in the event of an emergency. Rules vary depending on age and sometimes aren’t very clear. To help, we have shared some guidance on this topic below from a private school in Cardiff.
Babies, Toddlers and Very Young Children
Children that belong to this category should never be left home alone. In fact, at that age, they should not even be left in a child proof room for longer than a few minutes and that’s only if they can be heard from the distance. It puts them at risk of accidents and other harm. Those that are left unsupervised experience higher levels of fear, loneliness, and boredom.
Children Under 12
Primary aged children between the ages of 6 and 12 should not be left at home for long periods of time. The NSPCC explains that, at this age, they aren’t mature enough to walk home, cook or babysit other children without an adult being present. If you’re unable to, be sure to make alternative arrangements with friends, family, or a child minder.
Secondary School Children
At this age children can be left home alone, however, guidance stipulates that they should not be left at home without adult supervision overnight. While they may be older, it’s important to gauge how your child feels about being left home alone. See if they are ready before making any plans and if they are, talk to them about how to be safe at home alone.
