For as long as I can remember I have had to manage some kind of pain. From my (highly unsuccessful) time swimming competitively, to my teenage years in dance classes.
Pregnancy really took it’s toll on my body. I saw a chiropractor to treat my sciatica and while it was very effective for relieving pain in the short term, the long term effects of pregnancy stay with me now almost 4 years later.
I also suffer with migraines. My main migraine trigger is social situations, brought on by anxiety. While the best way for me to treat a migraine is to lie down in a dark room, that is just not always possible.
I think that as women, and particularly as mothers, we have a tendency to just power on through. I know I’m guilty of not taking action until it’s really bad – and I know I’m not alone in that.
While I’m not adverse to taking pain killers when required, there are many ways to manage pain naturally and that is what I prefer day to day. Below I will share some options for natural pain relief, so next time you’re struggling.

Natural Pain Relief
Keep Moving
I have a dodgy knee that has been lingering since I was a teenager. Pregnancy agitated the problem, and then years of baby wearing added to the strain. While I do believe it is important to rest an injury, I also think there is merit in keeping active.
Of course I don’t mean you should launch into a full workout, but joint pain can benefit from regular gentle movement. Swimming is a great way to stretch and move while the water takes the weight off of your joints. Yoga and pilates are also beneficial, as is just taking a simple walk.
Exercise releases endorphins which act as a natural pain relief. It will also help to build muscle which will help to support your joints and naturally reduce pain over time.
Explore Pain Relief Products
There is a huge range of pain relief products available, and it take a bit of trial and error to find which one works for you. Some people prefer applying heat, others prefer using ice.
Paingone have a number of products that are perfect for pain relief on the go. There is everything from freeze gels to TENS pens to give you simple drug free pain relief for a range of conditions.
Wear A Support
Prevention is always better than a cure, and for me that comes in the form of supporting my common pain areas if I know I will be doing something that will cause a flare. I walked around Disney Land in Florida with my knee in a support, because I knew the strain of walking for miles everyday while either pushing a pram or baby wearing JJ would be too much.

Following 6 years of carpel tunnel (another pregnancy legacy) wrist splints are common place in my life. JHogg has had surgery on his back and has still been known to reach for his back support brace in certain circumstances.
Mind-Body Exercises
In many of us pain can trigger our fight or flight response, which in turn can intensify the pain. Taking a moment to control your breathing and restore a sense of control over your body can play an important role in short term pain management. It can buy you some time when you are out and about, keep the worst of the pain in check and allow you to treat it later.
