Like just about every other person my age, I used to want a Mr Frosty as a kid. I can remember asking my parents about it every birthday and Christmas, but was always met with a no. JHogg was the same, never quite managing to get his hands on one of his own. So naturally, when I was offered a Mr Frosty Ice Crunchie Maker for review “for the children” I of course said yes. I was even kind enough to let the kids have a go.

What Does Mr Frosty Do?
Mr Frosty is a really simple device for making your own frozen treats at home. The box comes with the things you need to make 3 different icy snacks.
Homemade Slushies
The classic slushie is what Mr Frosty is best known for. The iconic snowman is essentially a fancy grater, turning ice into slushies. You place ice under his hat and push down slightly while turning the handle, resulting in crushed ice in the drawer. You then just need to pull it out and tip it into one of the bowls provided. Add some flavourings and enjoy!
Homemade Ice Lollies
I thought the slushies would be my favourite, but actually I really like the mini ice lolly kit that comes with Mr Frosty. We poured apple juice in and placed them in the fridge overnight. The next day they just popped out and were ready to eat. I love have you get to control what is in them, using either fruit juice or simply water and cordial, for a healthier ice lolly. It is so easy to use and I can see us making the most of it in the summer.
Fruity Ice Cubes
There are 2 ice cube trays included in the box, so you can make your own fun fruit cubes at home. You can full the moulds with either plain water, or add cordial or squash like you do for the homemade ice lollies.
What Do You Need For Mr Frosty?
Pretty much everything you need is in the box. Unlike the original Mr Frosty from the 80’s, no flavourings are provided. To flavour your slushies or lollies you can use squash or cordial, or fruit juice. We already had plenty of both at home ready to go.

The only other thing you need is some ice. We are lucky to have a freezer with an ice maker, and I feel that is a real game changer when it comes to Mr Frosty’s usability. If you don’t have ready made ice on tap then the you will need to make ice in advance.
Is Mr Frosty Any Good?
The 8 year old in me says absolutely yes, and Zee definitely agreed. He loved his slushie and his ice lolly! It was great fun for him to make and filled a nice block of time during the school holidays. But whether you think Mr Frosty is any good really depends on what your expectations are.

Making a slushie is hard work. I felt like I’d had a full arm work-out, and eventually roped in JHogg to help (who was loitering on the edges twitching for a turn anyway). Mr Frosty is suitable for age 3+ but even at 5 and a half Zee was not able work it. JHogg eventually found the optimum technique, holding Mr Frosty down and applying slight pressure to his hat with one hand and turning with the other. You are essentially grating ice so you can eat it, which when you think about it is a bit bizarre!
But with that said it was still good fun. Having our ice readily available definitely made the whole process a lot easier and it means we can spontaneously make slushies whenever we want. Zee loved the little penguin for adding flavouring to his slushie, and added some fresh fruit too to make it a proper snack.
Overall, I think that for the price Mr Frosty Ice Crunchy Maker is worth trying out. It’s a fun activity, plus it fulfilled a childhood dream for us! You can get your own Mr Frosty from Argos now.
I was sent a Mr Frosty Ice Crunchy Maker for the purposes of carrying out this review. All words and opinions are my own.
