Teaching Your Child to Manage their Emotions

Emotions, especially when experienced for the first time, are quite overwhelming for children to wrap their heads around. It’s all about how they can manage their feelings and what they can do for their mental health as well. As children won’t have the skills themselves to manage their emotions, we as parents should be on hand to work on how they can handle them in everyday life.

Here are some ways we can help our kids with their understanding of their emotions as advised from this private school in London.

Help Them Identify Each Emotion They Feel

Whether it’s angry, sad, irritated, sleepy, joyous, intrigued or determined, there are many different feelings and emotions we experience each day. You should ensure that your child is able to differentiate each of these feelings however, and show them how they came to feeling that way. Did they get into a disagreement with you or a friend, for example? Did they do really well in a school test this week that they feel overjoyed about? Use these opportunities to explore their understanding of their own emotions.

Teach Them To Use Some Simple Mindfulness Techniques

Mindfulness involves taking a moment away from any distractions and having a moment to yourself to realign your feelings and return feeling more positive and engaged. This can be as easy as sitting down in a room quietly for a few moments, taking in deep breaths for a few minutes, or trying out yoga with your child. Other ways to explore mindfulness can also be having a chat with your child freely and letting them express themselves.

Test Their Understanding Of The Senses

We have 7 senses that your child will explore. It’s something that’s a part of your child’s emotions – what they may see, hear, smell or touch can impact their emotions throughout the day. If you explore these senses with your child they’ll be more prepared for what or how they may feel throughout the day.
