Teaching Your Child to Resist Peer Pressure

Peer pressure is a big part of showing your child how they can manage those urges, face adversity in the classroom, and be a better person all round because of it. We all face bouts of peer pressure in our lives that can be harder to manage than others, but it’s all about how you handle it and what your child is also aware of when it happens to them.

In this guide from a prep school in Surrey, we explore ways you can teach your child to resist peer pressure in all walks of life.

Show your child what the potential consequences could be

Depending on what your child is caught doing, there could be a lot of changes happening to their school schedule. In extreme cases a child could be suspended or even expelled. Other things to consider however are a child’s risks to their health and behavioural changes.

If your child gets involved in illegal activities, for example, or activities that break school rules, your child will suffer a lot of setbacks in their education and in life experiences. Show your child that there are issues with a lot of things they may be tempted to try just because their friends are doing it.

Look at who your child hangs around with

Part of the problem with peer pressure is the company your child keeps. Are they hanging out with people that cause poor behaviour to happen? Or are they known as the school bullies? Your child will be influenced by those closest to them, which can lead to serious consequences if they’re discovered.

Invite your child’s friends round for dinner, or get actively involved in what your child’s getting up to. Your child will also appreciate you showing an interest in their friends and interests, making them feel more reassured.
