The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools

Schools have an enormous responsibility. Aside from of course providing pupils with an education, they must ensure that their emotional and physical welfare is taken care of. Pastoral care refers to the systems in place to monitor students and provide support where needed. We share more on the importance of pastoral care in schools from a boarding school in Birmingham below.

Home and social life have an undeniable impact on a child’s mental health. When things are bad, it can begin to affect school. In the worst case, it can lead to poor attendance and punctuality. Those that deliver pastoral care such as form tutors, councillors and mentors are all able to assist and work on putting solutions in place. Heads of year are also there for matters that need to be escalated and ensure that they are dealt with accordingly.

Aside from safeguarding matters and issues with other pupils, pastoral care aims to make children feel a part of the school community. The school house system is a prime example of how a family atmosphere is created. They give children a sense of belonging, and thus feel happy and motivated to go to school.

As children move up through school and enter secondary school, it’s even more so important for these support systems to be in place. Children often are split into several different classes for their subjects and have several different teachers. So that they have a friendly face and someone they can go to with their problems, they are allocated form tutors that they are able to see every day during registration. From a school perspective, they can pay close attention to individual children and make sure that everything’s okay.

Parents are just as much an important part of the work done at school, and pastoral care is there to support parents and children equally. If you feel that your child requires additional support, it is something that you can discuss and work on together.
