As your child grows up, they might need to go to school by themselves and use the school bus. As with all change, it can be nerve-wracking for children and any preparation can help them to adjust. A way that you can do this is by accompanying your child on the bus to help them familiarise the route and what to expect.
We have teamed up with a pre prep school in Buckinghamshire to share our top tips for preparing your child for the school bus.
Safety
When travelling by bus, there are a few things that your child will need to know about in order to keep themselves safe. As they are moving vehicles, there is a risk of injury. They must be seated until the bus has stopped and use handlebars when getting up or moving around.
Stranger Danger
When going to school alone, your child may come across strangers. Aside from the general encounters that they will have with bus staff etc when getting on and off the bus, you should teach your child to avoid making conversation with those that they don’t know.
Ride The Bus Together
Familiarising the route beforehand and how to use the bus can help them to adjust and not be thrown off when the unexpected happens. They will feel less anxious as they will know exactly where they are and be able to deal with situations like delays and cancellations.
Look For A Buddy
Parent communities are helpful because you can gain advice from other fellow parents and get involved in the running of your child’s school. You can make valuable connections and use them to seek out opportunities for your child. For example, in this case, you can find out whether any of their peers will be getting on the same bus and ask if your child can join them.
