When I was 7 months pregnant with Piglet we had the genius idea of moving house. In theory it was a great idea, we’d get in to the house in plenty of time before the baby came (if only he hadn’t come early!) and have lots of room for our family to grow. Lets be honest though – I hadn’t really though this plan through at all.
Moving house while pregnant was not quite as easy as I thought it would be, but with a bit of forward planing it can all go smoothly and (relatively) stress free. These are my top tips for moving house when pregnant.
1. Have a hospital bag packed separately
It doesn’t matter how far along you are, get a hospital bag packed and know where it is at all times. Once you are in to the new house it can be a nightmare finding everything, so knowing that your bag is packed and ready even if you don’t plan to use it for a few weeks or even months can be a bit of a weight off your mind.
2. Get packed early
I never got that burst of energy you’re meant to get in the second trimester, so in both my pregnancies I was tired from start to finish. I had the luxury of a few months notice before we moved house, and for me one of the biggest helps was getting a head start on the packing. Doing a couple of boxes a day meant I wasn’t wearing myself out but it was still all done in time for the big day.
3. Hire a removal company
One of my biggest regrets from moving house while pregnant was not hiring a removal company. We did it all ourselves (with help from our families) but I do wish we had use some professionals. You can have someone come and take care of the packing and moving for you, or simply have someone with a a removal van do the heavy lifting and get everything from A to B.
4. Get some help
Easier said than done in some cases, but I’m sure if you ask there will be some friends and family available to lend a hand. It may be help with packing boxes, doing the heavy lifting or a man with a van to shift all of your things. Moving without help is hard enough at the best of times, but moving house while pregnant can be made much easier with a bit of help from your friends.
You may not be fit to lift heavy boxes, but in most cases you would be fine to be in charge of driving the van if you hire one. Be sure to look for a selection of van insurance quotes to make sure you’re getting the very best price.
5. Look after yourself
It can be a long day, so make sure you take care of yourself (and your baby!). Rest when you need to, stay hydrated and don’t lift any boxes. Your job is to direct the troops! Find a seat and shout directions from it, point to where you want things to go and take charge of making the cups of tea and dishing out the biscuits.
