Why Is Self-Care Important?

Collaborative Post

It is so easy to feel overwhelmed at times by the hustle and bustle of modern-day life, not least in the context of a cost of living crisis that is engulfing the UK right now and having lived through the coronavirus pandemic. Around one in seven Britons have reported feeling stressed about the week to come on a Sunday, with over half saying they feel anxious about attending work in person.

Which is why it is so important to have a good self-care routine to try and alleviate the threats of burnout, depression and anxiety.

It is not just the mental benefits, but having good self-care has been proven to lower the threat of heart disease, stroke and cancer, while for some it can help them stay connected to their religion or keep in touch with their spiritual side.

Pamper Yourself

With busy work, family, and social lives to contend with it can, understandably, be easy to forget to treat ourselves. But do try and find time in your schedule for a bit of pampering and self-love.

This could include paying for a day at the spa where you can get a massage, receive a facial, and spend some time in the steam room.

Or if you fancy something a little more low-key around the house, then run a nice, hot bubble bath with relaxing salts, bath bombs, candles and a face mask or even use a green or camomile tea bag for your eyes.

You Don’t Have To Break The Bank

At a time when we’re all having to tighten the purse strings, spending big on self-care might not be for everyone.

But you needn’t break the bank to indulge yourself, there are a whole list of simple things you can do such as walking – whether that’s a brisk walk around the block or a longer stroll through the woods or on the hills.

You can also pop on your favourite music or watch your favourite TV show or film.

Getting a good night’s sleep, drinking plenty of water, and writing out lists of things you like about yourself can also be beneficial.

Self-Care Is Easy To Implement

The important thing with self-care is to stick to what works for you, perhaps try pencilling in even 20 minutes per day to start with to get into a routine.

Think carefully about the areas of your life that cause you the most stress and anxiety, then identify what you enjoy doing most to reduce the tension.

Nothing should feel like a chore when it comes to self-care, so really take time to consider the things that bring you joy in life.
