Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn’t it? When I had Piglet I was a first time mum and did as much research as I could on items I would need and how I wanted to parent a newborn. I asked my sister and friends for advise and took it all on board. In reality though, you learn best on the job. What worked for someone else won’t necessarily work for you. You need to find your feet on your own!
With Baby JJ here now there are a few things I am doing a bit differently. I did all the trial and error with Piglet and this time I think I know what we want a bit better!
1. Bedside Crib
With Piglet I just used a moses basket and then moved him into his own room when he grew out of it at nearly 5 months. Our long term plan for the boys is that they will share a bedroom, but with Piglet being such a good sleeper I’m reluctant to move JJ into the bedroom until he is near enough sleeping though.
I have borrowed a Chicco Next 2 Me bedside crib from my cousin. I have opted to not use it as a co-sleeper, but simply as a larger bed for in our bedroom. It is significantly bigger than a moses basket and so my hope is that we can keep JJ in our room until we are sure he won’t be disturbing Piglet through the night.
2. PurFlo Breathable Nest
Piglet was a fantastic sleeper but I am under no illusion that JJ will follow suit. I wasn’t taking any chances and started looking at sleep nests to keep him feeling secure in his bed, especially as the bedside crib is so much bigger – I didn’t want him to feel lost in it! The lovely Sarah from Run Jump Scrap very kindly sent me her PurFlo Breathable Nest as her youngest daughter has grown out of it. So far JJ has been sleeping really well in it and usually only wakes twice a night – so I think it’s working!
3. MyHummy
Still on the theme of sleep (can you tell I’m terrified of being kept up all night?), this time we are using a MyHummy as a sleep aid. Piglet had a Ewan The Dream Sheep which he loved, but I got sick of getting up to switch it on when he fussed in the night. We have a MyHummy Snoozy which is roughly the same size as Ewan, but has a cry sensor so it can switch on automatically and has a continuous option so you can have it playing for up to 12 hours if required.
4. Aqua Wipes
Baby wipes are a hot topic right now! I am using Aqua Wipes as they are as gentle on newborn skin as just cotton wool and water. They are vegan friendly and registered with the Vegan Society, but to me the most important aspect is the fact that they are biodegradable and plastic free. I’m glad to be doing my bit for the environment!
5. Double Breast Pump
I used a single electric breast pump with Piglet and it was exhausting. This time around I chose to get a double electric, just in case I had feeding issues again. I am so glad I did because I had to express after every feed while we were working on JJ’s latch. The Milk Genie from Pumpables halved my pumping time as I could express from both breasts at the same time. The fact that it has a rechargeable battery so it is portable was just a bonus!
So there you have it – 5 things I’m doing different with my second child. So far I have found that they all really suit us as a family and I hope that continues!
