While a lot of life lessons will be taught to your child as they progress through junior school and senior school, there are a lot of things you will need to teach your child to help them progress further. Here are 5 important life skills you should be teaching your child.
1. Organisation
Being organised is a good trait to have. It will give your child a lot more responsibility if they’re able to pack their school bag each morning and dress themselves. This also extends to your child knowing where their school books are and getting their homework done on time.
2. Maintaining good relationships
Your child is going to come across a lot of young children who are figuring things out for themselves. They will be talking to your child a lot as well, so it’s important your child learns how to build on these relationships and learns to socialise in the right way. Team-based activities and community projects are good ways for children to explore this life skill.

3. Handling failure
We all go through it, which is why it’s important we teach our children to learn how to cope with it. We have a responsibility to teach our children that we’re not born perfect and have many obstacles to overcome throughout our lives. This is why we should help our children solve problems together, as well as identifying our strengths and weaknesses.
4. Personal hygiene
This can go beyond reminding your child to brush their teeth twice a day. It can also include keeping their bedroom tidy, learning how to wash themselves properly, and washing clothes. As your child gets older they’ll be able to pick up more responsibilities around the house that will let them learn about being clean.
5. Honesty
Telling the truth is a great life skill. It might not be pleasant, but a lie can impact people a lot more. Show your child what it means to be honest and faithful, as it can shift friendships if that trust is broken.
