The day you send your child off to school can be emotional, but it’s also exciting. It doesn’t matter if it’s a community school, private girls school or a faith school – we all wave them off with a tear in our eyes but looking forward to seeing them learn and grow.
With so much of our children’s lives being spent in a school environment it is no wonder that many parent’s are keen to be an active member of the school community. There are many ways you can get involved at your children’s school, but if you’re not sure where to start then keep reading.
4 Ways To Be Active In Your Child’s School
Be A Class Rep
Most schools operate a class rep system. This is the main point of contact for each class. They usually push out information from the PTA to the class Whatsapp group (love them or hate them, every class usually has one). It is a fairly low intensive way to get involved at the school.
Join The PTA
The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) works with the school to host events, fundraise and encourage parent engagement. While there are some major roles that need to be filled, it is also possible to just be a general member and help where you can. Being a member of the PTA can be really fun and is one of the best ways of keeping up to date on what is going on in the school.

Volunteer For Trips
Most schools take trips at some point throughout the year, whether it be a full day out or a walk in the local area. It’s not always possible to volunteer to help on these trips, but if you do have the opportunity it is a great way to observe your child’s behaviour with their peers. It will also give you an insight into what they are learning about at that time.
Offer Your Expertise
Do you have a skill or special interest that could be useful or interesting to the school? When you learn your child’s topic for the term you may find that you can offer to do something to help. This may be just for your own child’s class or could spread school wide. Perhaps you can give a talk or run a STEM activity, or offer to assist in running a sports or lunchtime club. While they may not have asked for a specific volunteers there is often a way to get involved on your own terms.
