Styling Your Own Hair For A Wedding

AD | Sponsored Post

I am blessed with a good group of friends, and so is JHogg. It has meant that for the last few years we have had the joy of attending multiple weddings per year, celebrating their marriages cheering them on as they start a new chapter.

In the past I have often chosen to have my hair put up professionally, but it’s not always practical. Venues can be remote and hairdressers hard to come by. Never mind the fact that with the way things are right now many of us are trying to restrict unnecessary contacts. So sometimes using a hairdresser just isn’t an option.

I am thankful for a group of friends who have helped me learn how to style my own hair over the years. I can now confidently do my own wedding hair style that will hold for the hole day and night – even when things get a wild during the ceilidh.

It may seem daunting to style your own hair, but it can actually be really easy. It doesn’t even have to take long if you follow my tips.

How To Style Your Own Hair For A Wedding

Don’t Wash It That Day

The most important thing I’ve learnt is not to wash your hair the day of the wedding. Soft, freshly washed hair doesn’t hold in the way you’d want it to. Ideally wash your hair the day or the night before, that way it won’t be greasy but it will be able to cold a curl or stay in an up do.

If you have to wash your hair that day then you can add some products to help with the hold. Dry shampoo in particular gives your hair texture and works well.

Try Adding Hair Extensions

At the moment my hair is quite long, but in the past it’s been short and I’ve used clip in hair extensions to give it extra length and volume. They can be used for both an up-do or a simple curled look with your hair down.

Keep It Simple

It looks much better if you do a simple style well than if you try to do something more elaborate and it doesn’t work out right. Sometimes just curling your hair and pulling some back and securing it with a fascinator or some curbie grips is all you need.

I am a big fan of what we call a “posh pony”. This is when you pull your hair into a fairly high ponytail, often curling the ends too, and then using a piece of your hair to wrap around the hair bobble to make it invisible. It is so simple, but when you’re all dressed up it is often all you need!

A Simple Plait Changes Everything

Whenever I have my hair done professionally I always ask for it to be in a braided style. I LOVE a fancy plait. But even though I can French and Dutch braid my hair myself, it is not always neat enough for how I want it to look for a wedding.

I recently attended my sister in laws wedding and put my hair into a bun with 2 plaits down the side. While I’m sure it could have looked great to have the plaits as French plaits, a simple straight braid looked neater and I wasn’t worried about wispy bits coming out throughout the day.

The bun alone would have looked fine, but adding the plaits and wrapping them around the bun helped to finish the look.

However you choose to style your hair yourself as a wedding guest it is bound to look great – just don’t forget the hair spray!
