When I was younger I dreamed of having a big king sized bed. I longed to stretch out with no fear of a foot hanging off the edge (in case the monsters get it – obviously) and generally have loads of space. When we moved into our first flat in 2012 we got that much admired bed. There were a few things I didn’t factor in though. 1) Having to share the bed with a giant JHogg and 2) working out how to change king sized bed sheets.
I have spent the last 9 years trying to master the duvet cover change. I’ve tried just about every technique going, including getting inside the cover and dragging the duvet in after me. I did settle on a semi reasonable method, but it still felt like a full workout to get the job done and I’ve always felt there has to be a better way.
The Night Owl Coverless Duvet
I recently discovered the world of coverless duvets and honestly my mind is blown. Night Owl have a range of duvets that you can wash and reuse without having to worry about putting a cover on. They are available in 5 different colours (Dusk Pink, White Seersucker, Aurora Green, Twilight Blue, Cloud Grey) and in sizes from single up to super king.
I love the simplicity of the design. Block colour is broken up with stitching to give an effortless look which I have never been able to achieve with creased bedsheets. It is soft and warm to sleep with, and the king size was plenty big enough even when the kids inevitably jumped into the bed too in the early hours.
Winter Or Summer Duvet
Night Owl Coverless Duvets come in 2 different warmth options, a “year round warmth” at 10.5 tog or a summer duvet at 4.5 tog. I am pretty much always cold but for even for me 10.5 tog would have been too hot in the summer months. We opted for the lighter 4.5 tog summer duvet in the Aurora Green colour.
Over the winter months we will continue to use our current winter duvet, but thankfully the Night Owl duvet comes in a soft bag which you can keep using for storage. It was really simple to fold and roll the duvet back into the bag and I was really impressed that I didn’t have to struggle with it.
How To Wash A Coverless Duvet
The coverless duvets are designed to fit in your washing machine (with a 7kg+ capacity). A wash temperature of 40C is recommended with minimal detergent – just enough to keep it fresh but don’t go overboard.

How Long Does A Coverless Duvet Take To Dry?
We dried the Night Owl coverless duvet in the tumble drier and found it took less than the 90 minutes stated on the packaging. However, that will depend on the model of your machine.
During the summer months I am envisioning drying the duvet on the line outside, and on a sunny day I don’t think the 4.5 tog duvet will take long at all to dry. If you are drying the 10.5 tog duvet inside without a tumble drier you might want to consider the use of a dehumidifier to help speed up the process.
I was gifted a Night Owl coverless duvet in order to write this review. All words and opinions are my own.
